📖 About This Campground
Sycamore Canyon Campground at Point Mugu State Park north of Malibu California offers primitive tent and RV camping across the highway from the Pacific Ocean. The park features 3.6 miles of ocean shoreline, with rocky bluffs, sandy beaches, sand dunes, rugged hills and uplands, two major river canyons and wide grassy valleys. Seventy miles of hiking and mountain biking trails lead from the shore to the jagged pinnacles of the Boney Mountains State Wilderness Area.
The small campground is very popular during warmer months and on weekends. It is a small loop best suited to tent camping and small RVs/ truck campers. A few sites can fit larger RVs but they are few and often taken. No hookups available. Fresh water is available from spigots and at the multiple restroom facilities located within the campground. Each site has a picnic table and fire ring (firewood available from the on site camphost). Roads and parking pads are all paved. Sites are dirt and most are shaded.
The beach at Sycamore Canyon is very scenic but not friendly to swimming or surfing; steep approach = waves break close to shore and pretty violently. The real prize for campers at the campground are the famous mountain biking trails of Sycamore Canyon. Overlook, Backbone, Guadalasco and the main fire road are all enjoyable and when combined in to a series of loops can be some of the most amazing rides found anywhere in the world. For hikers the trails that turn up to the ridge a 1/4 mile allow you to reach scenic overlooks after a short but steep climb.
The popularity of this location does mean that you should use caution when leaving from camp; secure your belongings and keep them out of sight.
