About St. Mary Campground
St. Mary Campground in Glacier National Park is the largest campground on the east side of the park. It is one-half mile from the St. Mary Visitor Center (and park entrance). The proximity provides access to many activities including hiking, scenic boat tours, backpacking, and fishing. Primitive tent and RV sites on three distinct loops (A, B and C). Every site can be reserved via Recreation.gov and during season this campground is often completely full with only a handful of walk up sites available. All the sites are pull-thru style for easy entrance and exit. Each site has a picnic table and fire ring. Bear boxes, again, are shared style and not found at each site. Be aware the bears are a problem at this and all Glacier National Park campgrounds so properly handle scented items and food. St Mary River is close by and many of the sites provide majestic views looking up the St Mary Lake valley or of the towering mountains nearby. A shuttle stop is found at the visitor center a short distance away (unfortunately there are no easy paths to get back to the visitor center on foot without walking along the main park road). Restrooms and water spigots are available throughout the various loops. Bathrooms also have a dish cleaning station. St Mary Campground does have some large sites available for bigger rigs. Tenters and small RVs have the pick of the park. Some of the best sites are found at the top of Loop C with a clear site line looking up valley. A dump station is available at the exit. Paved roads and parking pads the campground is a short distance from the town of St Mary where food, gas and groceries are available. The park also benefits from this proximity for cellular and data services access. (Verizon 4G as of 08/2016 was solid 3 bars) Group sites are available. Most sites are situated in an open setting with small trees surrounds. See the park in standard format
