Pancake Bay Provincial Park, located along the northeastern shores of Lake Superior in Ontario, Canada, is renowned for its stunning sandy beaches, clear waters, and lush natural surroundings. Established in 1968, the park encompasses approximately 1,659 hectares and offers a variety of recreational activities, including camping, hiking, swimming, and wildlife viewing. Camping Facilities:
  • Campsites: The park features 325 campsites, with 160 offering electrical hookups, accommodating tents, trailers, and RVs. Many sites provide scenic views of Lake Superior, while others are nestled within wooded areas for a more secluded experience.
  • Radio-Free and Generator-Free Sites: For a quieter camping experience, sites 1-25 in the Hilltop Campground are designated as radio-free and generator-free.
  • Roofed Accommodations: The park offers five yurts, providing a comfortable alternative to traditional camping. Each yurt sleeps up to six people and includes amenities such as bunk beds and a small fridge.
  • Group Camping: Group campsites are available, accommodating between 15 to 40 people, located at the west end of the campground adjacent to the 3.5 km Nature Trail.
Amenities:
  • Comfort Stations: Three comfort stations equipped with showers and flush toilets are available for campers' convenience.
  • Laundry Facilities: High-efficiency washers and dryers are located at the East and West Campground comfort stations.
  • Day-Use Area: A beach front area with picnic tables, water taps, and vault toilets is located at the east end of the park, ideal for day visitors.
Recreational Activities:
  • Hiking: The park offers two main trails:
    • Pancake Bay Nature Trail (3.5 km): Features a boardwalk through a vast marshland, home to bald eagles, loons, and sandhill cranes.
    • Lookout Trail (14 km): Provides panoramic views of Lake Superior and the surrounding wilderness, including a vantage point overlooking the area where the SS Edmund Fitzgerald sank in 1975.
  • Beach Activities: The park boasts a 3 km sandy beach along Lake Superior, perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and picnicking.
  • Wildlife Viewing: The park's diverse ecosystems are home to various wildlife species, offering excellent opportunities for nature observation.
