📖 About This Campground

Thayer Lake Campground near Thayer Iowa offers primitive camping around a man-made fishing lake and 8 electric hookup sites also. This historic site was built to supply water to steam trains in the 1890's (not the campsites just the lake). Built by the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad in 1870 as a water supply for steam locomotives along their newly completed main line. Thayer Lake's water level fluctuates little in dry or wet years because it is spring-fed. Since the lake's watershed is small and has never contained much tilled land, sedimentation during its nearly 130-year history has been minimal. Though fishing boats are allowed, most regulars do just as well angling from the shoreline. Free primitive sites, small fee for electric hookups.
