📖 About This Campground

San Luis State Wildlife Area Campground in Hooper Colorado offers partial hookup RV (electric) and tent camping in a desert setting adjacent to a recreational lake. Water is not available in this remote and scenic campground. Sites sit on a rise with majestic views looking all around; catch the light in the late evening/ sunset illuminating the sand dunes. Sites and roads are paved. A picnic table is located at each site and all have a shade/ wind shelter over the table. The park can accommodate most any sized RV. Wildlife, notably bird watchers, will enjoy the abundant wildlife during migratory seasons. Four miles of wide, level gravel trails in the wildlife area provide a pleasant, safe hiking or mountain biking experience among the low dunes and wetlands. CPW is no longer accepting reservations as the rules for camping have changed. Camping sites in the campground are now walk-in only (first come, first served). Campers will need to plan to bring their own potable water, ice, and firewood. CPW provides free electrical hook-ups at some sites and will continue to do so until costs become prohibitive. Please be judicious in your use of electricity so that we can continue to provide this service for no additional cost. Please call the CPW Office at Monte Vista for more information at 719-587-6900.

We stayed at this campground in Oct 2016. This was a 1 night stay over while we visited Great Sand Dunes National Park. This park is remote, as is everything around here! It is about 30 minutes from the national park. The campground has partial hook ups - elec and water. The sites are on a little rise in the area giving great desert views. Great Sand Dunes are seen in the distance. Great sunrise and sunsets. VERY black sky. Sites are level and easy to access. We would stay again.
