Panther State Forest

Panther State Forest, located in McDowell County, West Virginia, near the Virginia and Kentucky borders, is the state's southernmost state forest, encompassing 7,810 acres of rugged, heavily wooded terrain.   Recreational Activities:

• Hiking: The forest offers several trails leading to scenic overlooks, providing hikers with opportunities to experience the area's natural beauty.
• Camping: An improved rustic campground features six campsites along Panther Creek, each equipped with electrical hookups, fireplaces, and picnic tables. Water access is available at the park office, approximately 2.5 miles from the campground. Reservations are accepted from Memorial Day through Labor Day, with first-come, first-served availability through October 31.
• Swimming: During summer, visitors can cool off in the swimming pool or watch children enjoy the wading pool.
• Picnicking: Picnic shelters are available for reservation, providing a pleasant setting for outdoor meals.
• Hunting and Fishing: Designated areas are open for hunting, and Panther Creek is stocked seasonally with trout. Valid West Virginia hunting or fishing licenses are required.

Location: Panther State Forest is situated near the town of Panther, WV. From Route 52, one mile north of Iaeger, turn at the forest sign to Panther. At the Panther Post Office, turn left at the sign and follow the road approximately 3.5 miles to the forest entrance.   Panther State Forest offers a tranquil retreat for nature enthusiasts, with a variety of outdoor activities set amidst the scenic Appalachian Mountains.
