📖 About This Campground
Lake Thunderbird State Park, located 12 miles east of Norman, Oklahoma, encompasses 1,874 acres and centers around the 6,000-acre Lake Thunderbird. The park offers a variety of recreational activities, including boating, fishing, hiking, and camping.
Recreational Activities:
- Boating and Fishing: The park features two marinas—Calypso Cove Marina and Little River Marina—and nine boat ramps, facilitating boating and fishing on Lake Thunderbird. Anglers can expect to catch largemouth bass, crappie, sunfish, channel catfish, white bass, and saugeye.
- Hiking and Mountain Biking: Lake Thunderbird State Park offers several trails suitable for hiking and mountain biking. Notable trails include the Clear Bay Trail System, which comprises multiple loops of varying difficulty, and the Hog Creek Trail.
- Swimming: Designated swim areas, such as Zoom Beach and Little Sandy, provide safe environments for swimming. These areas are marked by buoys to prevent boat access, ensuring swimmer safety.
- Campsites: The park offers over 200 RV sites, including 30 with full hookups, as well as numerous primitive campsites. Amenities include restrooms and a seasonal restaurant.
- Reservations: Campsite reservations can be made through the Oklahoma State Parks reservation system.
- Discovery Cove Nature Center: Open Wednesday through Sunday from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm, the center offers educational exhibits and programs about the local ecosystem.
- Archery Range: An archery range is available for use, providing opportunities for both beginners and experienced archers.
