📖 About This Campground

Horseshoe Campground is a scenic, high-elevation campsite nestled in the San Isabel National Forest, near Fairplay, Colorado. Situated at an elevation of 10,600 feet, it offers 18 campsites surrounded by aspen, Engelmann spruce, and bristlecone pines. The campground is located near the base of Sheep Mountain and provides access to various recreational activities, including hiking, fishing, and wildlife viewing.

  • Campsites: 18 sites, including 6 tent-only sites.

  • Amenities:

    • Vault toilets

    • Drinking water (hand pump)

    • Picnic tables

    • Fire rings with grates

  • RV Accommodations: Sites can accommodate RVs up to 25 feet in length.

  • Season: Typically open from mid-May to mid-October, depending on weather conditions.

  • Hiking: Access to the Limber Grove Trail, a 3-mile path winding through 1,000-year-old limber pines with twisted trunks.

⚠️ Important Considerations

  • Road Conditions: County Road 18 is a gravel road that may be rough; vehicles should be prepared for uneven surfaces.

  • Cell Service: Limited to no cell phone reception in the area.

  • Weather: Due to high elevation, temperatures can be cooler, and weather conditions can change rapidly. Campers should be prepared for a range of conditions and lower temperatures at night, even during the summer months.

  • Firewood: Firewood is available for sale at the campground, depending on fire restrictions. Please do not bring firewood from outside the area to prevent the spread of pests.
