The Swiss Army Life of RV Tools

Every RVer has that one item in their toolbox that’s clearly seen too much, done too much, and still somehow survives. You bought it for one thing, but now it’s your go-to solution for absolutely everything. Originally a multi-tool? Now it's also your spatula. A hammer? More like “The Everything Smacker.”

But nothing quite earns its honorary degree in “MacGyver-ology” like the humble tent stake.

It Starts With Good Intentions

You pack your rig with tools neatly arranged. Everything has a place. You’ve got your pliers, your wrench, your measuring tape, your drill. And then, for good measure, you toss in a handful of tent stakes. You never really expect to use them—until the day you do.

From Tent Stake to Hero

Here are just a few of the "non-tent" ways our stakes have earned their keep:

  • Awning stabilizer. Wind kicking up? Pound a stake into the ground and bungee your awning to it.

  • Sewer hose tamer. Is the slope just not quite right? Tent stake, meet zip tie.

  • Trash bag anchor. No campsite dumpster? Stake the bag in place. Just watch the wind doesn't turn it into a kite.

  • That thing to poke stuff with. Sap on your shoe? Curious hole in the ground? You know you’ve used it.

  • Temporary level. Not sure if your rig is crooked or if it’s just you? Tent stake to the rescue—plumb bob style.

That “Why Didn’t I Bring More” Moment

The first time you repurpose a tent stake is a lightbulb moment. The second time is borderline genius. By the third, you’re rationing them like they’re gold and wondering why they don’t sell these things in packs of 50.

Forget titanium cookware or Bluetooth leveling apps. The true MVP of camp setup is that slightly bent, dirt-covered piece of metal with stories to tell.

The Moral of the Story?

If it fits in your hand and can survive a solid whack with a rock, it belongs in your toolbox. You don’t need 87 tools. You just need the right wrong ones.

So next time someone asks, “Is that a tent stake in your tire chock?” just smile and say, “It is now.”
