(Because a full cooler is basically a game plan.)
Not all road trips start with a plan.
Some start with a vibe.
Some start with, “Let’s just go north.”
Most start with snacks.
Because the truth is: you don’t always need a mapped-out itinerary.
But you do need jerky.
And maybe a few granola bars you’ll pretend are healthy.
🚐 1. The Plan Was “Leave by 10” (It’s Now 12:47)
No one’s mad.
The tanks are filled, the dog’s in position, and someone found a bag of peanut butter pretzels.
Do we know where we’re camping tonight?
Absolutely not.
But morale is high. And the fridge is humming.
Which means we’re ready for anything… probably.
🧭 2. Wanderlust > Google Maps
The GPS says “Continue for 187 miles.”
But that scenic detour looks promising.
And the sign for a “Giant Ball of String” feels spiritually important.
Spontaneity is the real route.
If you get lost, just snack and reroute.
Or pretend you meant to take the long way because “we needed fuel anyway.”
🍿 3. Snacks Are the Real Navigation System
Snacks determine:
-
When you stop
-
How long you stay
-
Who’s still speaking to whom after three hours of construction traffic
Are you even road-tripping if you don’t have:
-
Chips that somehow taste better at 60mph
-
A cooler full of weird drinks from the last gas station
-
One snack that mysteriously vanishes (you’ll find the wrapper next week)
🐕 4. The Dog Has No Questions, Just Vibes
Humans ask:
-
“Did we take the right turn?”
-
“Where are we staying tonight?”
-
“What’s that rattle?”
The dog asks nothing.
They’re content with a window view, a nap, and shared bites of turkey jerky.
Truly the model traveler.
🧠 5. Because Sometimes Direction Is Overrated
You could plan every stop.
Every night.
Every backup campsite and fuel station.
But then you’d miss the joy of pulling over because something looked cool, smelled delicious, or had a goat named Carl selling postcards.
Sometimes, the best stories come from the unplanned turn…
and the fact that you were well-fed enough to enjoy it.
💬 Final Thoughts
You may not know exactly where you’re going.
But if:
-
The tires are rolling
-
The cooler is stocked
-
And someone remembered the snack bag…
Then you’re already halfway to a good trip.
Let the road do what it does.
You’ve got snacks.
You’ve got time.
You’ve got nowhere to be but everywhere worth seeing.
