Because what seemed “smart” at home became dead weight at the campsite.

Let’s face it: before your first big RV trip, you hit every checklist.
Watched every gear video. Read every blog titled “Must-Have RV Gear for 2025.”

You packed it all.
And now?

You’re three states in, half your storage is taken up by gear you haven’t touched, and that “must-have” item is currently doubling as a doorstop.

Here’s a tribute to all the “essential” gear we brought, believed in… and now actively avoid eye contact with.

🎯 1. The Fancy Outdoor Griddle That Weighs More Than My Dog

Yes, it made pancakes once. Yes, the bacon was glorious.
But it requires its own table, cleaning routine, propane hose, and strong back.

Reality:
We use the campfire, a small pan, and way less swearing now.

🪑 2. The Chair With 14 Features (That We Don’t Understand)

You know the one:

  • Cooler armrest

  • Built-in speaker

  • Footrest

  • Reclines to 180°

  • Cupholder that fits… nothing we own

It also weighs 25 lbs and folds up like origami designed by someone angry.

🎯 We now use the $15 aluminum chairs from the hardware store. Light, foldable, humble. Heroes.

🧯 3. The Backup-for-the-Backup-for-the-Backup

Two water filters. Three surge protectors.
A backup dump hose for the backup dump hose.

We were ready for anything—and now we’re rearranging bins just to find the broom.

🎯 You don’t need one of everything. You need the right one—and some spare fuses.

🔦 4. The Tactical Flashlight That Could Land a Plane

It strobes. It blinks SOS. It has a side spotlight, red mode, and a USB port.

But what do we actually use?

🎯 The $3 headlamp and the soft solar lantern that lives on the picnic table.

🥫 5. The Entire Portable Kitchen

Collapsible dish tub, collapsible colander, collapsible salad spinner (why?!), folding sink station, spice rack, bamboo cutting board set, Dutch oven...

🎯 Turns out, if you only cook in one pan—you don’t need a whole mobile cooking school.

📦 6. “Just in Case” Everything

  • 50’ extension cord (never needed more than 25’)

  • Shower caddy (too big for the RV shower)

  • RV vacuum (used once, jammed forever)

  • Full-size ironing board (still in plastic)

🎯 Newsflash: You won’t start ironing on the road. You’ll start rolling up your T-shirts and calling it a win.

💬 Final Thoughts

We all pack with good intentions.
But the real test of gear isn’t on a blog list—it’s in the day-to-day rhythm of RV life.

So if you’ve got a bin full of “essentials” you haven’t touched in months… you’re not alone.

The good news?
Campgrounds have swap tables, neighbors have needs, and your next packing list will be smarter, lighter, and a whole lot leaner.
